The Last Date

It was in the mid of August, the weather felt really hot that day. Sheila was grateful that she picked a café at a mall which was fully equipped with air-conditioners after coming back from her office. It was their favorite cafe. She sat silently, her fingers fidgeting the button of her blouse which was a little bit wrinkled after a hard day at work, she felt nervous while waiting for her husband. Not long after, her husband, Robert, came walking into the café, his posture so straight and so dashing in his uniform. He greeted Sheila like he would his colleagues, he sat beside his lovely wife and she gave him a piece of paper (divorce paper) with a warm, sad smile on her lips.

Then, the waitress came to the table and offers them the special menu today. They ordered the today’s special and the waitress retreated back to the kitchen.While the food was being prepared, they started talking about random things. Their small talk had been going well until suddenly Robert asked Sheila how she felt about their divorce. Sheila’s face turned pale with this sudden question. Robert who realized it said sorry to her for bringing up the topic and Sheila replied, “it’s okay.” with a small grin on her lips. Their food came to their table and they started to eat in silence. After they finished, Sheila called the waitress as a sign that she wanted to have a bill. The waitress came and gave her the bill. Sheila was about to pay the bill, but Robert stopped her and took out his wallet from his pocket. “No, let it be me who pay for our dinner, please. This is our last date anyway” Robert said. Sheila put a smile on her face while her heart was really broken. She was thinking how happy it would be if they both could be still together. “Okay Robert, thanks,” Sheila answered. Robert gave some money to the waitress and the waitress left them. The atmosphere seemed suffocating around them. Then, they stood up, Robert took Sheila’s hand and went out of the cafe together. They both promised they would never forget that last date.
